The 2023 Crystal Lake Sailing School Staff


Jessica G - Sailing School Director

Jessica graduated from Furman University with a BA in Sociology in May of 2019 and received her teaching certification in early education May 2020 from Furman University. This will be her thirteenth summer with the CLSS, and she has worked as an instructor and the head instructor before becoming the Director! Jessica started sailing on Butterflies when she was 5 years old and she started skippering a few years later. Jessica currently sails in the MC fleet and the E scow fleet. She now lives in Columbia, SC and is a 4th grade elementary school teacher. She has enjoyed each and every summer that she has spent with the CLSS and she is looking forward to another great year full of sailing fast and sailing fun.

Avery B - Senior Instructor

Avery will be a sophomore at UCLA in Los Angeles, California. Although originally from NYC, Avery ventured out to CA to pursue a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Economics with a minor in Global Studies. Avery loves UCLA, being a part of her sorority, hanging out with friends, playing sports and, of course, sailing! She has been sailing since she was four and skippered in the Junior Fleet from ages nine through sixteen. She skippered an MC in the MC fleet last summer and is looking forward to racing in the MC fleet again this summer. She has always loved sailing and spends almost every day of her summer out on a boat. She attended sailing school for 10 years and this will be her fifth summer working at the CLSS. She loves sailing on Butterflies, MC’s and E’s. Aside from sailing, she loves to play tennis, lacrosse, soccer and loves to ski, surf and rock climb. Avery also loves to waterski and tube, but most of all she loves to spend time on Crystal Lake. Avery has been coming to Crystal Lake her whole life and looks forward to coming up every year. Avery is super excited to get back to sailing, and even more excited to work at the Crystal Lake Sailing School!


Flynn H - Instructor

Flynn is from The Hague, Netherlands, and is going to be a senior at the American School of The Hague. At ASH, she is on the Varsity basketball and Soccer team. She also coached u12 and u14 girls soccer and basketball. Flynn has been coming up to Crystal Lake her whole life. She has been on boats her whole life, and started coming to Crystal Lake Sailing School when she was 5 or 6 years old. Flynn started skippering when she was 11 years old in the CLYC Junior Fleet. Last Summer, she was  the Commodore of the Junior Fleet. This will be her second year working for CLSS and she is ecstatic for another summer sailing at Crystal!


NATHAN G - Instructor

Nathan graduated from Interlochen Arts Academy in Northern Michigan. He is originally from Boulder Colorado. He just finished freshman year at NYU Tisch for a degree in theatre as well as entertainment management.  Nathan enjoys running, history, sports, and, most importantly, loves sailing. Nathan has been sailing for as long as he can remember. Growing up around many cousins and other family members sailing, he fell in love with it. Nathan took classes at CLSC from around 7-9 and then raced in the CLYC Junior Fleet until he graduated at 16. Some of his favorite sailing memories are Torch Lake Nationals and when Westerns was at the CLYC. Nathan lives on Crystal Lake and loves it so much. He’s spent his whole life spending summers on the lake and wouldn't ask for anything more. He is very excited to sail and spend time at the CLSS this summer!


Will M - Instructor

Will is from Indianapolis, Indiana and is a sophomore at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee where he is studying Biology. Will has been coming up to Crystal Lake his whole life. Will joined the junior fleet when he was 5 and began skippering a few years later until he was 16. This will be Will’s third year with the CLSS. He loves to play lacrosse, water ski, and sail. Will can’t wait to be a sailing instructor again and is so excited to teach again this summer!!


LILY W - INSTRUCTOR

Lily is from Denver, Colorado and is going to be a freshman at University of Wisconsin where she will study political science. She loves to run, be outside, and hang out with friends! She has been sailing since she was 5 and began skippering in the Junior Fleet when she was 10 until she was 16. She did sailing school for multiple years and is excited for her second year as an instructor this year. Lily has been coming to Crystal Lake her whole life and is so excited for this summer!


Mary O - Instructor

Mary is entering into her junior year of high school in Chicago. This is her second summer with the CLSS. She has been skippering Butterfly sailboats since she was 10, and has recently begun skippering MC sailboats. When not out on the water, Mary enjoys playing tennis, working as a nanny, and spending time with friends. Mary looks forward to another great summer on Crystal!


MAYES B - TRAINEE

Mayes been coming to Crystal Lake since she was barely 2 months old. In the fall, she will be a freshman in high school at The Kinkaid School in Houston, TX.  This will be her first year working at the Crystal Lake Sailing School and she is super excited to be joining this team.  She began learning to sail at the CLYC when she was 6 years old and is currently part of the Junior Fleet skippering her own butterfly. Her hobbies on the lake include sailing, swimming, wake boarding and wake surfing.  She loves spending time on the water with family and friends.  When she is at home she is a JV cheerleader and plays basketball and softball for her school.  She loves being part of a team sport. She is looking forward to meeting your children and having a great time this summer.


SYDNEY M - TRAINEE

Sydney is from New Castle, Indiana, and is going to be a senior at New Castle High School. She is captain of the cross country, swimming, and track teams, and is involved with Student Government, Renaissance Student Leadership, and the broadcasting Vocational program. When she graduates, Sydney hopes to study broadcasting and journalism in college. Sydney has been coming up to Crystal Lake her whole life. She partook in sailing school at the CLSS for four years, and she started skippering in the Junior fleet when she was 12. Her hobbies at the lake include swimming, biking, running, water skiing, and of course, sailing! This will be Sydney’s second year working at CLSS, and she is looking forward to another great summer!
